Promethea Moth Cocoon

Moths of Pennsylvania

Moth of the Week 4-3-06
promethiacocoon-edited.jpg

This is a picture of a Promethea moth cocoon, although it is not in the greatest condition. Within is a moth going through metamorphosis from a medium to large size caterpillar into a beautiful and large silkmoth, which hopefully will be seen this summer and occur as one of the 2006 Moths of the Week.

Promethea cocoons are just about the easiest moth cocoons to spot in the wild, as they are about the length and width of your index finger and hang from the bare branches of wild cherry trees in the winter.
